New: listen to ePub books and phone photos

Can Audible read my PDF?

No. Audible plays the audiobooks in its store. Some come with a PDF to look at, but that file goes with the audiobook; Audible's help page about it says nothing about reading out your own files (checked 2026-10-26). Read-Along does: upload your PDF and it reads aloud while each word lights up. Everyone gets one free document a day, no card needed. Premium has no daily limit and puts your documents first.

The Tortoise and the Hare — Aesop0:00 / 0:44

The Tortoise and the Hare, by Aesop.

A Hare one day ridiculed the short feet and slow pace of the Tortoise, who replied, laughing: "Though you be swift as the wind, I will beat you in a race." The Hare, believing her assertion to be simply impossible, assented to the proposal; and they agreed that the Fox should choose the course and fix the goal.

On the day appointed for the race the two started together. The Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course. The Hare, lying down by the wayside, fell fast asleep.

At last waking up, and moving as fast as he could, he saw the Tortoise had reached the goal, and was comfortably dozing after her fatigue.

Slow but steady wins the race.

Does Audible read my own PDFs or documents?

Not that we can find. Audible's help page covers the PDF that comes with some audiobooks, which you open to look at. It does not describe reading your own files aloud (checked 2026-10-26).

What can I use instead?

Read-Along. Upload a PDF, Word, ePub, RTF, ODT, Markdown, text or HTML file (up to 3 GB), or paste a web link. A short document is ready in a few minutes; a long one takes about half as long as it takes to listen. We email you the link, or text it once if you signed in by phone and ticked the box.

Can I put my own file on Audible?

Only by publishing it for sale, for example through ACX for audiobooks. That is for authors, not for listening to your own file.

What does Read-Along cost?

Everyone gets one free document a day, no card needed. Premium has no daily limit and puts your documents first. Premium is $14.50 a month, or $69 a year. It renews until you cancel.

What are the limits?

Read-Along reads English and is not a store of finished audiobooks; it reads the files you bring. The voice is a computer voice, not a human narrator. Narration stops at about 3 hours.
